PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Building a Shared Approach

Positive Discipline in the Montessori Classroom - The Practitioner's Class is the foundation of PDMC's whole-school training program. Through two days of interactive learning, faculty members explore the principles and practices of Positive Discipline in the Montessori Classroom and their application within authentic Montessori environments.

A shared learning experience fosters a common language and consistent framework for supporting children, helping educators build respectful relationships and collaborative classroom communities throughout the school.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE

The Practitioner's Class

The Practitioner's Class is the foundational course for PDMC. The class introduces the principles and practices of Positive Discipline in the Montessori Classroom through interactive discussion, experiential learning, demonstration and collaborative activities. Participants will use a child-study approach to explore the roots of behavior while learning practices that foster respectful relationships, responsibility, and collaborative classroom communities.

Participants learn how to teach important social and life skills in a way that is encouraging, respectful, and effective for both children and adults.

✓Teach life skills (self-discipline, responsibility, cooperation, problem solving etc.) so that students can cooperate and learn successfully in the classroom.
✓Develop a staff support system using the PDMC Student Support Plan model, to address difficult behavior challenges.
✓Build a shared framework among faculty.
The Practitioner’s Class also provides a rare opportunity for staff members to spend two full days together, developing camaraderie, teamwork, and a common vision for Montessori discipline.

Continuing Your Montessori School’s Growth

After completing the Practitioner’s Class, schools can continue their Positive Discipline journey through additional onsite training opportunities designed to support deeper implementation across the entire school community.

Conflict to Collaboration

A follow-up workshop designed to help educators strengthen their ability to navigate challenging interactions, build cooperation, and create more collaborative classroom environments.

TRAINING SCHEDULE

Typical Training Visit

8:30 AM – 4:30 PM - Faculty Training

Practitioner’s Class runs for 8 hours per day, typically from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch, and breaks in the morning and afternoon.

6:00 AM – 8:15 PM - Parent Presentation

For those schools choosing to hold a parent presentation the evening before the first day of the staff Practitioner’s Class, the workshop time is generally 6:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. The parent presentation may be opened up to parents outside the school's community to help promote the school.

Schools have flexible options to make the Practitioner’s Class more financially viable:

Schools may share the cost of the Practitioner’s Class with another school(s). This helps reduce the financial commitment while still giving both schools access to the training.

✓Open Registration (Area-Based Enrollment)
Schools may also choose to open registration to teachers from other Montessori schools in the area. All registrations are processed through the PDMC website.
When a teacher registers, your school will be credited 50% of the individual or group registration fee, which can significantly reduce overall program costs.

How does Positive Discipline align with Montessori philosophy?

Montessori training centers all over the world have used Adlerian psychology for decades (AMI, AMS, IMC and others). It is fair to say that Adlerian principles, as taught through Positive Discipline, are the embodiment of Montessori philosophy in a social/emotional context. Here are some of the primary Adlerian principles that direct this work (corresponding basic Montessori principles are in parenthesis:

a) Children are deserving of dignity and respect (respect)

b) Children learn about themselves, about others, and about how to have healthy and productive relationships through their experiences with others (discovery based learning)

c) Respectful discipline is kind and firm at the same time (freedom within limits)

d) Children must be free to make mistakes and learn through their experience, as mistakes are opportunity to learn (self-correcting social/emotional environment)

e) Discipline, relationship skills and respect can be taught, and should be taught (grace and courtesy)

f) Behavior is goal oriented. A child’s primary social/emotional goal is to gain belonging and significance in their community. Each child has different ways they seek to gain this needed connection, and it’s the adult’s role to create an accepting and accountable environment that meets those needs (preparation of the environment)

g) Children ultimately gain the belonging and significance that they seek through discovering how capable they are and contributing to the group/community (social responsibility)

h) Children are capable! They have the ability of learning social and life skills that will not only be helpful to them, but to others (independence)

One of the difficulties that Montessori teachers and schools face is that there is a wide variation in the way that adults interpret and implement discipline in the Montessori classroom. While most of us have had some education on “Classroom Management” in Montessori training, the content is often weaved together from different sources, based on the instructor’s or training center’s experience. This leaves a lot up to the interpretation of a new teacher, and not everyone interprets the information the same way. While most of us leave training with a specific methodology and the resources (albums, curriculum, etc.) for implementing the Montessori academic curriculum, we often lack the same specific methodology for classroom discipline, which is often the most stressful part of the job!
